Rwenzori Mountains National Park remains one of Uganda’s hidden gems. Tucked away in the quiet, remote western region, it offers a peaceful and untouched world of remarkable natural beauty. The park features some of the finest multi-day trekking adventures in Africa, and anyone who makes the journey leaves with unforgettable memories.
The Rwenzori range lies within the Albertine Rift Valley in East Africa, stretching roughly 130 km from north to south along the border shared by western Uganda and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The section located in Uganda sits in the country’s southwest, just north of the renowned Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Africa’s top safari hotspots.
The most convenient way to reach the Rwenzoris is to fly into Kampala and travel west by road toward the mountains. Uganda’s western and southwestern regions are among its most popular tourism areas, especially with attractions like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home of the world-famous mountain gorilla trekking experience.
Mount Stanley—also known as Mount Ngaliema—is a towering massif in the Rwenzori range, straddling the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It ranks as Africa’s third-highest mountain, following Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Its tallest point is Margherita Peak, rising to 5,109 m, with other notable summits such as Alexandra Peak at 5,091 m.
At the top of Mount Stanley lies the stunning Margherita Glacier, a 100-metre-thick sheet of ice. The meltwater that flows from this glacier feeds into one of the major sources of the legendary White Nile.
The Rwenzori Mountains offer simply fantastic trekking trails and mountaineering opportunities. The routes are uncrowded, the views spectacular, and the vegetation like nothing you’ve ever seen before! We definitely feel that hiking in the Rwenzoris is one of the best adventure activities in Uganda!
There are two main trek routes in Rwenzori Mountains National Park: the Central Circuit Trail and the Kilembe Route. The Central Circuit Trail enters the mountain range from the east and does a large, anticlockwise loop. The Kilembe Route, on the other hand, takes you into the mountains from the south and follows a longer, narrower circuit which runs in a northwest–southeast direction. Both routes offer hut accommodation.
The Rwenzori Mountains can be enjoyed year-round, but if trekking is your goal, it’s worth keeping the weather in mind. The trails are often muddy and slippery, even in good conditions, so choosing the drier months can make your hike more comfortable. The most favourable periods for trekking are July to August and December to February.
One of the great perks of visiting the Rwenzoris is that they never feel crowded. There’s hardly anything you could call a true “peak season,” so you can plan your adventure during the dry months without worrying about packed trails.
